About Freemasonry

Scottish Freemasonry in the Cape of Good Hope

What is Freemasonry?

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur aFreemasonry is a method passed down through the ages to work on one’s own awareness process. With the help of symbols that are related to each other in the context of various rituals, the Know Thyself is contemplated. The goal is to get to know itself better and to determine your own place in relation to yourself, the fellow man, the cosmos, nature or God: the All.

Freemasons look for what connects people and want to pay attention to that and not to what divides them.

The Order of Freemasons assumes the existence of a world order propelling man and humanity. Every Freemason is free to experience the Essence of Things, God, nature, in his own way. This makes it possible that people of different religious convictions, Christians, Muslims, unchurched or, for example, humanists can be members of the same Order.

Freemasons are men who are looking for answers to the questions about the essentials of life. They meet in the lodge and exchange ideas on all kinds of subjects. They test their own opinions and thoughts against those of other Freemasons, who sometimes have very different views and convictions. Freemasons look for what connects people and want to pay attention to that and not to what divides them.

Freemasons certainly agree on a number of essential points:

  • All men are equal (but not equal!) and part of the general brotherhood of men;
  • Every person has the right to independently search for truth;
  • Every person is responsible for his own actions;
  • Every person should work diligently for the good of the whole community;
  • Freemasons strive for the development of all those qualities of mind and spirit which can elevate man and humanity to a higher spiritual and moral level;
  • Freemasons strive for the multifaceted and harmonious development of man and humanity.
  • Freemasons are not the only ones pursuing these ideals and not the only ones seeking answers to life’s questions. But the method of Freemasonry (with symbols and rituals) is unique.

What are you doing on your life journey?

Working on yourself and giving this back to society. In order to mean something to others, you must first work on yourself. Become a more conscious person who knows himself and his principles well. We call this ‘Know Thyself’. Only by working on yourself can you give something back to society.

Freemasonry is an ancient society of men who work with symbols and rituals. It sounds mysterious, especially if you’ve read the Dan Brown books ‘The Da Vinci Code’ and ‘The Lost Symbol’. Freemasonry has a rich history and has inspired many famous men to do something for society. In our rituals (for convenience: plays with a beautiful ancient psychological building symbolism) we work on our inner journey. To learn from each other. Tolerance, brotherhood and an inner urge to develop ourselves are keywords. Personal growth requires insight, self-reflection and comparing your opinion with that of others.

We mirror and compare each other’s opinions during discussion evenings and follow a lecture on a topic that is on the mind of a member at that moment and about which we exchange thoughts afterwards. The topics that are treated are very diverse, from personal experiences to new social developments, philosophy, science, symbolism, history, etc. In this way we search collectively and individually for the values that fit our life journey. Tolerance, brotherhood and an inner urge to develop ourselves are keywords.

Secret society?
No not at all! Just men from different backgrounds who are full of life, are broadly interested and find a place in the lodge where they can share this with others!

Is Freemasonry for me?

Answering this question may be difficult for you if you do not know all aspects of Freemasonry. But on the other hand, that is perhaps the beauty of Freemasonry. Perhaps answering the following questions can help you on your way:

  • I am interested in ideological matters, spirituality and attitude to life.
  • I am looking for a forum that contributes to my personal development.
  • I am not doctrinaire and have no extreme or radical views that make dialogue impossible.
  • You can characterize me as tolerant and tolerant with a need to learn
  • My basic attitude to life is to be understanding of the opinion of others.
  • As an individual I want to be myself in a group of people and be able to give my opinion there.
  • I like to share and compare opinions with people who are working on this.
  • I feel there is some kind of supreme intelligence (ecclesiastical or non-ecclesiastical).
  • I am sensitive to the universal language of symbolism.
  • I can appreciate and combine tradition and age-old values with contemporary matters.
  • I can make enough time to attend regularly (once or  twice a month).
  • I enjoy meeting younger and older people from different backgrounds.
  • Am willing to give input to the lodge about my vision of life and to contribute to the group process within the lodge.
  • My partner (if any) favours the Freemasonry method.
  • I see myself as a free thinker.
  • If you answered YES to the above questions, Freemasonry is a good new step forward on your life journey!
  • We would like to meet you personally and  invite you hereby to join one of our information evenings
